Open carry advocates are fuming with the news that California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed legislation banning the open carry of unloaded handguns, a situation that does not portend gloom or doom for Washington State open carriers.
The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2012, and already on the Open Carry forum, members are reacting. Suffice to say Gov. Brown is not going to win any popularity contests. The co-founder of OpenCarry.org has issued a statement.
“It’s dissapointing that Governor Brown has signed AB 144. The new law forces citizens to open carry long guns in urban public places where holstered handguns are now the norm in California and 42 other states. AB 144 also adds even further complexity to California’s already convoluted gun laws that confuse citizens and law enforcement officers alike. But on the bright side, banning handgun open carry undermines the constitutionality of California’s discretionary concealed handgun permit scheme.”
